How to Overcome Panic Attacks: An Orthodox Christian Perspective

In this video, Mother Siluana Vlad talks about the spiritual roots of panic attacks, including hidden sins and ancestral traumas. She offers practical Orthodox guidance: confession, prayer for the departed, entrusting oneself to Christ, and cultivating the healthy fear of God as a protective wall against sin and danger.
Mother Siluana Vlad has reposed in the Lord on Tuesday, June 8th, 2021. Her ministry in the Romanian Orthodox Church is impressive. She was the abbess of the Convent of St. Silouan in Iasi, coordinator of the Training and Counseling Center “The Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel” and through her many conferences she created a bridge between the young generation and the Church.

Mother Siluana:

“How can I be freed from panic attacks?” Let us seek their origin. For example, we may suffer panic attacks because deep within ourselves we are guilty. We harbor hidden sins, concealed deeds that we believe no one knows, and we have buried them there; we have not confessed them, we have not told anyone, and then my conscience and the depth of my heart tell me: “No, this is not right.” Bring it forth, confess, be reconciled with God, be reconciled with yourself, and be delivered from this.

At other times, panic attacks stem from inheritance. Deep traumas endured by parents, by grandparents, right? And through this communion between our souls, these inner burdens are passed down to us as well. Here, you may also consult a psychotherapist, but pray for your parents, for your grandparents; if they have reposed, pray with the Akathist for the Departed.

And then, enter into your inner closet when fear strikes, when the panic attack comes, breathe calmly and say: “I am Thine, O Lord, and I offer myself to Thee; care for me, I entrust myself to Thee.” And when we entrust ourselves to God, we no longer have panic attacks, but acquire healthy fear. Healthy fear is that which becomes a rampart we erect against the dangers of this world. We do not walk in dark places, we do not go to bars, places where there is violence and debauchery. We do not get into relationships with abusive people; so this fear helps me build this protective wall.

The fear of God helps me say no to sin, even when it does not seem so… Yet I fear, not that God will punish me, but I fear losing God; I fear God losing me, and I fear becoming entangled in this world. Thus, my inner anguish comes from the fact that I have become just an object of the world. I do not know who I am, I do not know my purpose here, I know nothing, yet deep within me a voice says: “I am someone; I was brought into being by God to rejoice, to love Him, to answer His love, and to be sanctified.” And realizing this truth, and entering into communion with God, brings healing.

It takes time, but you should make a beginning today.
