Elder Nikon:
Some people accuse us, the Orthodox Christians of having too many feasts of the Mother of God, even if such details are not mentioned in the Gospels…
We celebrate her Nativity and Dormition, but neither one nor the other is mentioned…
Of course, we understand that these people are far from the Church and are looking for excuses to stay far and continue living their way of life…
Because when someone approaches the Church he or she has to change a lot of things… And since we don’t want to change, we try to find excuses…
Yes, Gospels don’t mention her Nativity or Dormition, but do you need to be a philosopher to know that she was born and died one day?
We learn the things of our Faith not only by listening or reading about them… but by experiencing them… If we don’t experience them, we cannot know them!
So many things Christ did that the evangelist says if they should be written every one, all the books in the world wouldn’t be enough [John 21:25]. This doesn’t mean that things not described in the Gospels didn’t take place…
So the Holy Spirit increases our knowledge of Mother of God and we love her because we live with her…
How far from knowledge are those who don’t live with her…
She is the dawn which revealed the Sun of justice…
These things are so simple, but because we ceased to be simple, we cannot understand them…
