Look at a mother: she constantly offers her love to her children; she constantly receives love from them in return, so her love becomes ever increasing. But when we want the love of others exclusively for ourselves and expect everyone else to give to us, and if, when we do some good, we are thinking of compensation, then, instead of having priceless love, we have cheap love. This estranges us from God, and we receive love neither from God nor from other people.
