It is no small feat to struggle against the spirit of sadness, for it can drive our spirit into perdition and despair… all things that befall us are not contrary to divine Providence… And if what is sent to us does not seem to us at the time helpful, it will later be seen clearly to have been truly beneficial for us, not as we ourselves wish, but as God arranges. We should, therefore, not exaggerate with our human ideas these hardships, but we should believe with all our heart that the eye of God sees all and that nothing can happen to us without his will… Therefore, being in the throes of temptations, we should give thanks to God, our Benefactor and Savior, for these. As St. Isaac teaches: “Lips that give thanks always are worthy to be blessed by God and such a grateful heart walks in grace.”
St. Nil Sorsky, The Complete Writings
