Metropolitan Elias (Audi) of the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch for the Archdiocese of Beirut in Lebanon talks about the resurrection of Christ starting from the texts of the Easter services.
Metropolitan Elias:
“The RESURRECTION of CHRIST
Till this hour, as we chant, the PASSIONS and the RESURRECTION are witnessed together by the pagan.
We chanted today clear hymns with this regard
Today hath Hades groaned, crying: It were better for me that I had not received the Begotten of Mary; for when He approached me, He loosed my power and crushed my gates of brass, arousing the souls which I had possessed, He being God. Wherefore, glory be to Thy Crucifixion and to Thy Resurrection, O Lord. (Holy Saturday Vesperal Liturgy)
And we sing glorifying: “Wherefore, glory be to Thy CRUCIFIXION and to Thy RESURRECTION, O Lord.”
As we were singing we were saying that: the HADES is SUFFERING, that DEATH is SUFFERING because Jesus approached it.
The hymn states: “Today hath Hades groaned, crying: My power hath VANISHED because I received a dead Man as one of the dead, but I could not hold him completely
Rather, I LOST with Him those who were under my REIGN.
From the beginning of time I have held control over the dead, but this One RAISED ALL.”
And we shout: “Wherefore glory be to Thy CRUCIFIXION and to Thy RESURRECTION, O Lord.”
And afterwards we say: Today the Hades groaned, crying: My POWER hath been SWALLOWED up for the SHEPHERD, CRUCIFIED, hath RAISED ADAM and those whom I had possessed I LOST.
Those whom I had swallowed by my might, I have GIVEN UP completely for the CRUCIFIED One hath EMPTIED the GRAVES and the might of death hath VANISHED.
Wherefore glory be to Thy CRUCIFIXION and to Thy RESURRECTION, O Lord.”
